Pre-Install Checklist

In order to make the installation and use of your water shutoff device easier for you, please ensure your desired installation location meets all the below requirements.

Indoor Location

  1. The water shutoff device needs to be placed indoors.
  2. The device needs to be connected to an electrical outlet that is not controlled by a switch, located indoors, and within 30 feet of the water shutoff location.

Properly Functioning Plumbing

  1. The water shutoff valve you are connecting to needs to be a ball valve, made of brass, and with a pipe size must be between ½” to 1 ½”.
  2. The water shutoff valve and handle must be in good working condition with no corrosion, signs of decay, or leakage. (Note: To test if your setup is in good working condition, use the water shutoff handle to close and re-open the valve.)
  3. The valve must operate smoothly and can be fully opened and fully closed, without use of tools or applying excessive force.
  4. All piping adjacent to the valve should also be made of copper. The piping and piping joints adjacent to the valve need to be good working condition with no corrosion, signs of decay, or leakage.

Note: An adapter kit is required for pipe/valve sizes larger than 1 ¼”. An Allen wrench (also known as hex key) is included for assembly of the adapter kit.

Adequate Clearance

  1. The water shutoff device requires adequate clearance to properly mount and function in its intended manner.
  2. There needs to be at least 1 ¼” of space between the flat edge of the valve handle and the outermost edge of the pipe.
  3. Minimum clearance requirements around the valve handle:
    • 4” of clearance before and after the valve as measured from the center of the valve along the axis of the pipe in either direction
    • 3 ½” of clearance above the valve as measured from the top of the stem nut upward
    • 2 ½” of clearance behind the valve as measured from the center of the valve
  4. There should be adequate space, including any elbows and fittings, to allow the device clamps to fully seat on connecting pipes.
